A figure walks in the night beside you, drawn on by destiny. Rain drips from his helmet's brim, and you hear him mutter:
"The night is dark, and secrets hidden;
deep and bright the dreams of wonder.
The stary wheels of the celestial clock
turn above the moon, as we walk under.
Wandering wide I sometimes stray,
but ever return to the path that is mine.
Chosen by Fate, I strive to prove worthy
Lady Cordir my guide, as I am thine.
We walk in darkness and dream of light
shrouded and warmed by the blanket of night."
He suddenly blushes as he realizes you were listening, "I..I..Ehem,..didn't m.mean t..t.to bother you with all that" After a few minutes of silence he raises a finger and says "Husshh..." His eyes close and he listens intently. A smile returns to his face, though you could hear nothing at all. "Come", he says, "our path lies this way", and he leads on into the dark night.

It would be easy to overlook the gnome before you - he bears the short stature of his race and its' powerful build, but nothing out of the ordinary. He does not have flashy armor or weapons, or a raging bloodlust gleaming in his eyes, or the visage of some hero from a romantic novel. Instead, he is reserved and quiet, choosing to listen rather than hear the sound of his own voice, and has a certain determined dignity about him. Removing his battered helm, he nods to those present with a pleasant and friendly smile that echoes in his brown eyes. There is something about him, though, that calls for another look. Something that speaks of sorrow and loss, newfound love and great joy, and a deep, unshakeable faith, having served Fate as its mortal hand and blade in the world. He has an inner peace and happiness that he wears as comfortably as the armor on his body - a sense of knowing himself, his fellows, his place in the Pattern that no soul or event could shake. This warrior has no need to shout his achievements or his beliefs for all to hear - his deeds and service to others speaks in a whisper of
truth greater than any loud posturing.
A slight breeze stirs his short, dark brown hair, and he turns his face to the wind. A tiny dove-gray feather floats down from the sky, and a tender smile creeps over his face, transforming it from a somewhat plain expression to one of utter happiness. He whispers, "Upon the breeze, my Lady soars, the earth beneath her wings,
And ne'r before, has this gnome felt the joy her presence brings Her dark gray eyes upon me fall, to Heaven I am lift'. This union sweet, two hearts complete, Fate's truest, sweetest gift."
A slight blush creeps over his face, and he ducks his head, and falls silent...

Character History:
Let me introduce myself:
I am Noctus, the gnome cleric. I was born on February the 1st and I am the son of experienced wanderers of the realms of the Final Challenge. After mastering Lleheibwen, I considered myself big enough to explore the world. As I grew up in Thistlerock, I started with the Lizard area and the goblin camp. But since then, I have expanded my horizons and visit the goblin caves, the kobold mines and Moria, now. Being only a little cleric at the moment, my reputation still has to grow. That's why someone attacked me yesterday while I was collecting items from the Northern Continents' Hometowns.
As I have already told you, I descended from experienced travelers of the realms. Let me specify this. My grandparents are Twinklefire and Welverin on my father's side and Silverstar and Diane on my mother's side. They raised me, too. I never really knew my parents, since my mother died an early death when visiting Demon Realm during a summer holiday. Dinin, my father, does not know he is my father and as a matter of fact, I don't even want him to know anymore. My mother gave birth to me just a couple of months before she died. My grandparents took good care of me after my mother left me as an orphan. Silverstar and Diane were my mothers parents and they taught me the basic skills a young cleric needs to know. Welverin and Twinklefire, who are my other grandparents, gave me lessons in fighting and socializing. For the last few years, I have been out on my own. I have decided to walk the path of Life, if I will be allowed to print my footsteps upon it to explore the world.
When Sarevok, a good friend of mine, decided to cease wandering the lands, he donated his adventure gear to me. Now I need to live up to the expectations that people have of me.

History: What If Noctus Had Never Joined Fate?
Cordir challenged the chosen to a writing contest: "What If... I had never joined Fate." Noctus' entry was particularly telling.
A small cozy cabin.

The moment you step inside the cabin, the fresh scent of forests meets you, yet the scent has the unmistakable smell of old books. There is a ten by ten foot indigo carpet surrounding the brick fireplace that dominates the wall in front of you. The carpet is crowded full with cushions and velvet lined furniture. Looking through the archway besides the fireplace you notice a very messy kitchen. The chef de cuisine is obviously not the chef des dishes as well. A mahogany desk stands in one corner of the room. Large bookshelves along the walls are filled with books of all sizes. The open window displays a view of a forest covered mountain ridge in the distance. Upon the wall hangs a large map of the Realm, and on the opposite wall hangs a blackboard with diagrams, notes and sketches. A cabinet filled with fine liquor, silver decanters and crystal goblets sits by the wall below it. A staircase winds along the wall, leading up to the bedroom.
In the corner next to the fireplace you see a relaxed gnome in a rocking chair. Reading a book and drinking a glass of fine wine, this gnome seems very content. Suddenly you are startled by birds chirping some sort of melodious alarm. A small smile appears upon the gnome's face. He turns towards the birds and nods as if to say: 'Thanks for warning me, My friends need me, I'll be at it right away!'. He quickly grabs his weapons and leaves through the open door.
Let's evaluate this:
1. You stepped into a cozy cabin. In case you weren't aware of who lives there here's a quick look at the sign near the door.: 'Tranquility and Noctus' What does this tell you? Well first of all Noctus found his wonderful and lovely wife within the Chosen of Fate. Would this have happened if he had been part of another following? I sincerely doubt it.
2. The gnome seems content, why? He's surrounded by friends who appreciate his presence and are like family to him. He'd walk a thousand miles through fire and over water if needed to aid them. His personal goals have mostly changed into goals that he would like the following or other individuals within the following to achieve. It satisfies him if they do.
3. Some would say this gnome is rich and he does admit that. His richness consists mostly of things of emotional value however. Sure he can't complain. Over the years and with the help of many friends he managed to gather a nice set of equipment and enough gold pieces to build this lovely house. But he would trade all that for the true friendship and love he finds within the Chosen.
Anyway, I felt that I had to share this with you, because without becoming part of the Chosen of Fate the life of this gnome would look more or less like this:
A smelly grotto.

You step into a small grotto. There's hardly any light so you really have to watch your step. Piles of bones and old rusty pieces of armores are scattered throughout the cave. The water dripping into a pool in the back of the grotto smells strange and you get the feeling that it might not be such a good idea to drink it.

Need I go on? It's hard to say how things go when you make different decisions. But this might have been an option. I guess there's no need to say more: Hundreds of people have asked me to join their following... none of them knew me well enough. There's not a chance that I will leave the following that raised me, that made me what I am. I am proud of this following and its members, and will keep doing anything I can to make them proud of me!

June 28, 2001 - Kharad-Delving is installed at about 2am mud time, and Noctus is the first to find it.

August 11, 2001 - Noctus completes MM#87 by killing lineaoth camp leader.
August 14, 2001 - Dracos, Noctus and Gytar slay all of the demons in the Void twice, and all the Demons of the Strands once (guesstimated at 150, approximately.) Approximately 30 minutes later, they return to do a CR for Treehugger. A look at one of the rooms...
August 20, 2001 - Noctus reaches Ordained level 17.
August 21, 2001 - Cordir drags Noctus and Adso kicking and screaming out of Triton Halls.
September 1, 2001 - Ravaged, combined with Maldobar and a ghost, kills Noctus.
September 4, 2001 - A reward of 1.5 million is offered by Tranquility in return for the restrings in the corpse: The entirety of the group savings of the Chosen of Fate.
September 17, 2001 - Dracos dies in Jester's Keep, but Noctus, Keat and Wolfgang complete a successful CR.
September 27, 2001 - Bruce joins the Dark. Noctus reaches Ordained level 20. Noctus survives 51 consecutive teleports in a contest created by Kantor.
September 30, 2001 - Gytar and Noctus did a CR for Aoife in the Strands of matter, and Wistom aided them in killing the demons.
October 3, 2001 - Lins bad recalls and dies in Jester's keep. Noctus, Pitt and Kaldred attempt a rescue, but the key is not obtainable.
October 09, 2001 - Joeb dies in the strands of matter, and Kantor and Noctus retrieve the corpse. Two minutes after the two return to the guild, the corpse decays.
October 18, 2001 - Noctus of Fate reaches level 21 ordained. Carnage dies in the Demon Realm and Noctus completes the CR. The Gnomes of TFC get downright silly ( with a little help from above.)

November 23, 2001 - Noctus dies in the Dream realm attempting to help Kaldred with a Triat Mastery quest. Several folks attempt to interfere with corpse rescue efforts, however, Mael, Kantor, Charles, Noctus, Abe, and Tranquility are determined to get the corpse back. Unfortunately, due to code restrictions on key popping, the corpse is not obtainable and decays.
November 23, 2001 - Armalag reaches Ordained level 4. Tranquility dies in Sanguinna, but Noctus is there to perform the CR. Rubicant not only offered to help with the corpse... He retrieved the eggs Noctus had to drop to pick up her corpse, and returned them.
November 28, 2001 - Manx, Noctus and Teluin "whoop" the copper dragons in Dragon's Lair. Noctus, Charles, and Kantor die in the Dream Realm. Due to some sort of strange bug, their corpses don't decay for well over 7 hours.
December 4, 2001- Noctus, Lanfear, Garvax, Katrana, Taibh, Morgaine and Rigel rejoin the Chosen of Fate in the morning.
December 13, 2001 - DarkClaw dies in the Demon Realm and her sweetie Garland, Mandrake and Noctus go in and retrieve the corpse.
December 19, 2001 - An Anathema casts confusion on a Bounty Hunter, so it goes after Derth. Noctus and Tranquility assist Derth with slaying the Hunter and bag it for him.
December 20, 2001 - Noctus posts 'T+N' - a poem.
January 03, 2002 - Paython dies to the Balrog on the third floor of Master's Tower - Garland and Noctus perform the CR.
January 13, 2002 - Noctus, Gytar and Lanfear do a CR on the 4th floor of Master's Tower for Trell.

March 08, 2002 - The Chosen of Fate purchase Noctus's wedding ring from Astaldo, amidst much rejoincing.

July 10, 2002 - Noctus does a CR for a newbie on the Longship.
July 30, 2002 - Markoon dies in the demon realm, and Mandrake attempts a CR but is slain himself. Mandrake tells you (in common), 'mental note-- don't attempt CRs in Demon Realm without a weapon'. Abe, Solaron, Noctus, Markoon and Kerson dive into the Demon Realm. They snag corpses of Dakkon and Markoon, but Mandrake's is lost when a Darkling snags it. Noctus also performs a CR of Bergal, a Tiger.
August 07, 2002 - Aoife dies to Lord Zul and Noctus of Fate performs the CR.
September 26, 2002 - Noctus reaches #6 on the XP Rank with 2,244,347 experience, #4 on the Location Quest rank, and #10 on Mob Mastery rank.
October 9, 2002 - Noctus did a CR for Trell at Velalisier.
October 24, 2001- Noctus tries the Black Dracolich for a Mob Mastery target, but dies. His friends Gytar and Kerson perform a swift CR.
October 29, 2002 - What is believed to be the highest combined score on a mobhunt occured today... The game ended after round 8. Lexie took first place with 177 points and Noctus came in second with 174'.
November 25, 2002 - Noctus completes 3 LQs, reaching 2082 points total.
November 26, 2002 - Kaldred and Noctus retrieved Recwon's corpse at Velalisier -- Apparently Recwon "couldn't resist tasting a teleport potion."

January 24, 2003 - Edge dies in the Good Shrine, and Noctus and Keat perform the CR.
April 1, 2003 - Noctus and Lanfear are both slain by Cordir for pulling April Fools Day pranks. As a result of the loss of Lanfear from his group while fighting a mob, Lins declares his intentions to never help another member of Fate ever again.
April 10, 2003 - A game of Mob Hunt ends in Round 8: Noctus won with 114 points and Aviendha came in second with 7 points.
April 16, 2003 - Noctus gains MM #88 - a Triton Warrior and #89 - another Triton Warrior.
April 25, 2003 - Noctus (who cut his hand severely in RL) reports'I did a 1 handed cr in the vortex, to find an empty corpse from andrew ;)'
