As stated above INT and DEX are the primary and secondary stat for mages.  During the character generation process, an additional bonus is given to the INT and DEX stats.  Additionally, the race of your character also helps or hinders your INT and DEX stats.  Each race ranks differently for INT and DEX.  Listed below in descending order are the recommended races for a mage.  By selecting a race higher on the list you have a better chance of getting more favorable INT and DEX stats during the reroll process.  However, bear in mind that your choice may help or hinder a secondary or tertiary class.

Official Information

Mages have few fighting skills, but they make up for it with a huge bag of tricks and their spells, all which become more devastating as the mage becomes more experienced. Mages also may memorize written spells, giving them great flexibility. Mages are restricted to non-metal armor, small one handed weapons, and no shield.

Races

An elf, a half-elf, a sahuagin, a minotaur, or a human can be a Mage.

Player-Supplied Information

(From the TFC for Newbies website created by Nyx)

Magic missile, teleport, stone skin, burning hands, portal, shield, lightning bolt, invisibility, fly... and the list goes on. And on. And on. Mages have access to an incredible number of spells. The two they will be called upon to cast more often than any other, however, are probably going to be identify and improved identify. These are the ones that allow the residents of the realm to learn what all of the stuff they does. Mages can get high intelligence scores, which helps them develop a large number of mana points.

The primary stat for mages is intelligence.
The secondary stat for mages is dexterity.

Rumor and Speculation

Mages have the highest hit-roll of all classes as a prime class.
