Samiyah - Level 30 Bard Review

From The Final Challenge Wiki

This is the level 30 Bard performance for Samiyah, making her the fourth bard in TFC's history to reach effective level 50.

Invitation Notes

The Invitation:

On Friday, June 14th, at 9 PM EST / 8 PM CST, a bardic performance will be taking place. This one, however, is OOC Information for all who attend - including, in an odd twist, the Bard. (See next section)

Samiyah bint Seraph will be visiting her homeland and singing about all of those individuals that have shaped her world since leaving the Tribal Sands all those years ago. You are invited to witness it.

However, there are a few ground rules:

  • With any bardic performance, we ask that disruptions be minimal - please turn off spell and food triggers.
  • The performance will, with Greater God permission, be held in a new zone: The Tribal Sands. Those attending the performance are required to stay with the group. No wandering, exploring, killing mobs/players or picking up items is allowed during the performance. All who wish to attend will be transferred to the starting point.
  • Please respect that this is something you will be witnessing on an OOC basis. Don't discuss it with Sami afterwards: She doesn't know a darned thing about it.

The Explanation: (OOC)
It's my philosophy that one's final Bard performance should be truly the core of who the bard is. Eathor showed us his love of puzzles and his wide mud knowledge with a final performance that was a quest that rewarded others for participating. Aoide showed us the mothering nature that she has, wishing to share the story of a love-lorn pair and bring their restless spirits rest. Samiyah's true nature is her deep relationships (both good and bad) with the people around her and how she has become entwined in the tales and lives of many, across alignment boundaries - and yes, her naivete.

So how to convey that in a performance?

At her core, Samiyah is a "Disney Princess": Well-meaning, oblivious, kind... constantly stumbling into trouble, and unaware of the wise warnings and counsel of others that would keep her on a safer path. Oh. And yes: Stubborn. Disney Princesses obliviously wander through the forests and villages, oftentimes singing with the critters and with friends, and never, ever, hear their good advice or warnings. (Think Snow White) I thought that might be kind of fun - and it's oh, so very Samiyah.

I also wanted to do something that hasn't been done before in a Bardic performance to date: a duet.

Samiyah will be UNAWARE, in character, of the presence of her audience at this performance, and UNAWARE, in character, of those individuals who have a part in the performance. The entire performance and experience is an OOC event for _all_ participants. yes, that's weird, I know. But I think it's going to be fun anyway.

A Dead End Amidst the Dunes
[Exits: north]
From this vantage point, only travel to the north is possible along a
narrow trail marked by the footprints of various desert creatures. To
the south, a dune blocks your view of the Maelmordian Sea and another
dune, its slope sharply angled, prevents travel to the east. Swirling
up like a living thing in twisting ropes like prison bars, sand hides
the way west. That opaque barrier to progress is the Veil which bars
travel in and out of these lands. The outline of a few broken stones
are visible under foot, as if long ago, a way out was found westward,
into the Great Eastern Desert.
The sky is rainy and a warm southerly breeze blows.

The Performance

Samiyah stares out into the dunes, trembling with nerves.
Samiyah turns and looks up at her brother, smiling briefly.

Samiyah reaches out and squeezes his hand, then flings herself into his arms for a quick hug.
Samiyah says (in common), 'This is something I have to do for myself.'.

Samiyah says (in common), 'Please, wait for me here?'.

Cresom frowns.
Cresom says, 'I don't like the idea of that very much.’
Cresom says, 'Didn't they pretty much kick you out?’

Samiyah nods slightly, murmuring, 'Yes..'

Cresom says, 'Didn’t they say don’t come back or they’ll kill you?

Samiyah nods and tacks on a small shrug.
Samiyah looks out over the dunes. 'They were going to kill me. My mother helped me escape.'
Samiyah says softly, 'I have to face it, Cresom. Or.. Or I'm just .. stuck here, even when I'm not here. '.
Samiyah says (in common), 'Does that make any sense?'.

Samiyah sings, 'Though I've grown beyond the sands, my roots are here, in poisoned lands.'.
Cresom says, 'A scar's across both of our hands, but most will never understand.’.

Cresom takes Sami's hand, turning it over to display the scar on it.
Cresom mirrors the gesture, turning over his own scarred hand.

Samiyah sings, 'The tribe, its hold is on me yet - such binding rules I can’t forget.'.
Cresom says, 'Happy now, but I don't forget - The way he harmed, when you first met'.

Cresom says, 'God or mortal, I'd withstand - any time YOU have a plan'.
Samiyah sings, 'But it's the comfort of your hand, that's helped me make so many stands.'.

Cresom says, 'I'll stand with you 'gainst any threat - Don't think I won't! Don't take that bet!’.
Samiyah sings, 'And though I'm oft with doubt beset, a better brother, couldn’t get!'.

Samiyah says (in common), '.. I just.. I have to, Cresom. Thank you for bringing me this far.'.
Samiyah smiles at her brother.
Samiyah heads down the trail to the north.
Samiyah leaves north.

Cresom waits for Sami to continue down the path, turn and wave, and continue on her way.
Cresom watches until she is just out of sight.
Cresom says, 'No way am I gonna let you go in there alone, Sister.
Cresom disappears from sight. Footprints appear in the sand, leading off into the oasis.

A Weakness in the Veil
[Exits: east south]
Jesses trailing from its legs, a hunting falcon swoops by, seeking prey.
Blood drips from the carcass of a large lizard carried by this tribesman.

Samiyah pauses by the palms, listening to the music wafting through the air.
Samiyah sings softly, 'An Ogre bard, who would have thought? But he has gone, where most cannot.'.
Samiyah sings softly, 'From my very early days, he helped me in so many ways.'.
Samiyah sings softly, 'When Hunt was called, when death my lot, I went to him, so deep distraught.'.
Samiyah sings softly, 'And asked him - not his hand to stay, but instead, the Wyld to praise.'.
Samiyah sings softly, 'A kindness, strange, I asked of him - take up the Hunt so dark and grim..
Samiyah sings softly, 'Let it be *his* blade to fall, that never Aoide, I would brawl..
Samiyah sings softly, 'His weapon thrice my throat to skim, and then soul sent to Seraphim..
Samiyah sings softly, 'And still our friendship holds no pall, two broken hearts he did forestall.'.

An Intersection of Desert Paths
[Exits: north east south west]
Screaming its anger, this desert sand-cat has been denied its prey.

A Path Near a Pyramid
[Exits: north east south]
Scrawny from too few meals of late, this desert vulture must find food soon.

Samiyah shivers. Brrrrrrrrr.

A Path Alongside a Pyramid
[Exits: north south]
Massive stone blocks reach skyward at an angle, immediately to the west,
their bulk forming the eastern edge of a large, ancient pyramid. One can
only imagine the terrors that dwell within! Within its shadow lies what
appears to be an oasis, around which a tent-village has been erected. It
lies just to the north and east, the path curving to meet it. Southward,
this well-used path extends into the depths of the desert, disappearing
from view.
You feel rain on your face and the warm wind.
Shouldering a palm-wood spear, Dalal prepares to head out into the desert.

Samiyah pauses by one of the palm trees, resting a hand on its trunk.
Samiyah gazes at the hunter that heads into the desert, his predatory movements reminding her of someone else.

A blush colors her features and she nervously checks her veil, glancing into the village nearby.

Samiyah whispers, 'Haraam, girl. Here, they WILL whip you for it!'

Ghazkull moves over towards Samiyah, his nose inches from her neck.

Samiyah leans her head against her hand on the trees trunk, oblivious to his presence.

Ghazkull traces a finger down Samiyah's arm to the slight marks on her wrist.
Ghazkull whispers, 'My thirst you quenched, by crimson stain'd, and by your gift, Rebirth attained,'.

Samiyah shivers, as goose-bumps race over her skin.
Samiyah sings, 'My Sahib's honor, to maintain, these wicked urges must restrain!'

Ghazkull whispers, 'That first shy kiss, our lips did meet, Nearly made this dead heart beat.'.
Ghazkull's breathing becomes shallower at the recollection of the moment.

Samiyah sings, 'Your gentle lesson, such a treat - a tender moment, I'd repeat.'
Samiyah's fingers rise to barely graze against her lips in remembrance.

Samiyah sings, 'Though I try hard to abstain, his mouth on mine runs through my brain.'.
Samiyah blushes, ducking her head and concealing her face in one of the layers of her veil.

Ghazkull whispers, 'Your blood has coursed twice through my veins - my thirst for you, it never wanes.'.
Ghazkull draws a black rose from his bags and breathes its fragrance, to try and regain some control.
Ghazkull tries to hold a black rose, but has his hands full.

Ghazkull whispers, 'From this bond, I'll not retreat - My Almond pastry, ever sweet'
Samiyah sings, 'Though love, not bond, I must defeat, yet it's with you, I feel complete.'

Samiyah's expression turns wistful as she bites her lower lip.

Ghazkull forces himself to take a several steps back, turning to face upwind so her scent will not flood his senses.
Ghazkull breathes slowly, drawing strength from his nearby Sister.

Samiyah forces herself to take a deep breath, squaring her shoulders, and moves cautiously towards the oasis.
Samiyah slips quietly into the camp, her movements sneaky and hidey.

At the Outskirts of an Oasis
[Exits: north east south]
Browning in the sun, this fallen palm frond lays discarded on the ground.
Carrying a load of palm tree boughs, a man of the tribe hurries by.
Hands busy with a variety of tasks, this tribeswoman keeps focused and silent.
Eyes downcast, this young girl-child of the tribe goes about her tasks.

Frowning, Abdul Hakim listens to those around him.

A Beautiful Desert Oasis
[Exits: north east south west]
Browning in the sun, this fallen palm frond lays discarded on the ground.
Made of thin boughs lashed together, this drying rack holds strips of meat.
Carrying a load of palm tree boughs, a man of the tribe hurries by.
Hands busy with a variety of tasks, this tribeswoman keeps focused and silent.
Rushing by, this boy-child of the tribe has been sent on an errand.

At the Center of an Oasis
[Exits: north east south west]
The temperature here is less harsh, shaded by the pyramid that towers to
the west, and gentled by the presence of palms swaying gently above. The
center of the oasis is a pool, a low stone wall enclosing it protectively.
Its waters are essential for life, and there are footprints all around it,
leading in all directions. A small lizard suns itself upon the rocks, and
someone's washing rests in a basket by a small side-pool created for that
purpose.
Water bubbles and flows within this oasis pool, surrounded by a low stone wall.
Browning in the sun, this fallen palm frond lays discarded on the ground.
Carrying a load of palm tree boughs, a man of the tribe hurries by.
Hands busy with a variety of tasks, this tribeswoman keeps focused and silent.
Sitting silently and still, Najiya watches her grandfather work.
Nimble fingers allow Akmal to set even the smallest of stones into jewelry.

Samiyah pauses by the oasis pool, gazing into it for a long moment in silence, seeing other waters.
She sits on the low wall, trailing her fingers through the cool liquid.
Samiyah says sadly, '..Castaways send messages in a bottle.. that's what the story said.'
Samiyah asks plaintively, 'Why did it have to go SO wrong? Why does _everything_ with Sahib Wish go SO wrong?'
Her shoulders slump slightly, before she forces herself to straighten them once more.

Samiyah murmurs, 'he would have made such a great bard..'
Her voice is sad, tinged with wistful regret.

The Lord Alchemist unexpectedly moves to stand behind the desert bard, looking down at her intently.

He sings, 'Singing dervish with alluring eyes, Innocent veils hide nasty surprise.'
Samiyah sings, '..What if ..I'd never been Alchemized, not had that veil torn from these eyes?'

Samiyah sings, But lies could not those truths negate, I saw them _both_, their truest state!'
The Lord Alchemist sings, 'Catalyst of pain and misguided hate, the magic she scribes to seal my fate.'.

The Lord Alchemist sings, 'Yet for her, hold no ling'ring spite - she cannot yet see wrong from right!'.
Samiyah's tone grows a touch defensive.
Samiyah sings, '*His* words contain their _own_ hard bite, and every time we talk - we fight,

She sighs, weary of it, but yet..
Samiyah sings, 'I would not choose another path but: not my poem's aftermath...'
The Lord Alchemist sings, 'No, it's him that earns my wrath - that slithering snake by name: "Seraph"'.

Samiyah sighs, dejected.

Within the Oasis
[Exits: south west]
Browning in the sun, this fallen palm frond lays discarded on the ground.
Carrying a load of palm tree boughs, a man of the tribe hurries by.
Hands busy with a variety of tasks, this tribeswoman keeps focused and silent.
This young girl child of the tribe keeps her eyes properly downcast.

Samiyah opens the tent-flap.
Samiyah takes a deep breath and enters that place she has always been forbidden.

The Tent of the Shrines
[Exits: north east south west]

An Altar to the Guardian
[Exits: west]
A heavy altar of palm wood dominates the chamber, dedicated to the Guardian
of the tribes. A large square rug covers the wood floor and goat skins are
stretched taut between each of the tent poles, their surfaces covered in a
swirling artistic script. Upon the altar, a heavy black weapon lays, dark
stains over its surface, and marring the pale goat hide it rests upon. The
powerful figure of the Guardian has been painted on a goat hide stretched
taut between two of the tent poles. The cross-breeze makes the image seem
to move, as if His wings flexed as if prepared for flight.
(White Aura) Lips moving silently in prayer, Abdul Salam ignores everything around him.

Samiyah glances around, her eyes welling up with tears of remembered torment and fear.
She blinks them away and square her shoulders, murmuring a mantra softly to herself.

Seraph steps forward, enclosing His bard with His wings, momentarily hiding her from view.
Seraph whispers, 'You know what you must do, daughter. What you were born to do.'.
Seraph whispers, 'You must kill Salaam. Vengeance and punishment for his wrongdoing.'.

Samiyah shivers, oblivious to his presence, but her mind wandering along the path he has set.

Seraph sings, 'My singing sparrow, desert muse - Of all the tribe, it's you I choose..'.
Samiyah sings, 'So many people just accuse my explanations just refused. .'.

Samiyah sings, 'Why won't you ever say goodbye - spread your wings, escape and fly? '.
Seraph sings, 'You were so gentle, quiet, shy - the slightest bark, and you would cry.'.

Seraph sings, 'So yes: your tender spirit bruised - But to *teach*, and not abuse.'.
Samiyah sings, 'In a world of Reds and Blues, it's hard to walk in others' shoes.'.

Seraph sings, I've taught you caution - question why! - and now your songs ring through the sky.
Samiyah sings, 'And though sometimes, the rules, defy, my home is in his Order High.'.

Samiyah sings, 'I'm not some simp'ring brainless doll! I do not grovel, beg or crawl! .'.
Seraph sings, Those with heart, shall lead them all - And now they answer Order's call.

Samiyah sings, 'I wish I could more clear convey - Those words on me, like stones they weigh,'.
Seraph sings, 'I smile each time you softly pray, and each your tender fears allay.'

Seraph sings, 'You choose and choose: you're not a thrall - You are the prize within my Hall.'.
Samiyah sings, 'And while on me, did Vengeance fall, and cost to heart was nothing small.'.

Samiyah sings, 'There is no price I wouldn't pay, for home, for hearth, for Him, I stay.'.

Seraph continues, the words barely above a whisper:
Seraph sings, 'And though, you sometimes disobey - You always come back to my way.'.

Katrana glances at Seraph angrily, her crimson eyes flashing.

Katrana murmurs, 'Dear one, little desert maid, upon you such a weight is laid!'.
Samiyah sings, 'So many times, I nearly strayed, away from vow to Mother made,'.

Samiyah sings, 'For in the dark, a hunt-horn rings - but no song within me sings.'.
Katrana sings, 'I, too, had dreams, was seeing things, and know the heartbreak that it brings'.

Katrana sings, 'Why did you never ask for aid, give your worship, geas and prayed?'.
Samiyah sings, 'I whispered once, in silence, prayed, But in the end, I did as bade'.

Chico ftells, 'Hello!'.

Mas looks at Abdul Salam, Elder of the tribe.

Katrana says, 'Your lack of vows - it deeply stings - We would have taught to use your wings!'.
Samiyah sings sadly, 'You do not know of desert things, that ever pulls on my heart strings'.

Samiyah says softly, 'I HAD to choose him...It was the only possible choice. He is my _home_.'
Samiyah says softly, 'I wish people understood..

Samiyah ftells, 'hi chico'.
Samiyah ftells, 'doing my Final Performance right now'.

Samiyah shivers and flees this place.

In a Old, Patched Tent
[Exits: north]
Filled to bursting, this reed basket holds a tribesmember's belongings.
Shoulders curled defensively, this tribesman blocks out the sneers and jeers.

Chico ftells, 'Hi Samiyah!'.

Samiyah glares at her father as she passes, slipping out through the tent wall.
Samiyah opens the tent-flap.

A Small Stand of Palms
[Exits: north west]

Tall palms reach skyward, the wind through their tops providing a
comforting music. The shade they provide is a welcome respite from
the harsh desert sun, and beneath them, scattered here and there,
are the husks of fallen fruit. A low flat rock deliberately set
beneath one large palm seems to be a perfect spot to sit and rest
for a time, soothed by the rustling of the fronds that drifts down
from above.
Chico arrives from a puff of smoke.

Samiyah rests a moment in the oasis, looking up at the darkening sky.

Chico sits down and thinks deeply.

Samiyah sings, 'The Lady Lost and those Embraced who sometimes smile and sometimes chase.'.
Samiyah sings, 'My thoughts of them so oft conflict - what She thinks, I can't predict.'.
Samiyah sings, 'Against a lie or harm, am braced - which She implies is quite misplaced!.'.
Samiyah sings, 'But Sahib's law is clear and strict ... so my actions, must constrict..'.

Samiyah sings, 'One of hers, I ache to help - my sister made to Venom's whelp.'.
Samiyah sings, 'Now, *him*, I'd hurt a thousand times, while her heart he e're confines!.'.
Samiyah sings, 'Pluck his fangs until he yelps, and hide his body 'neath the kelp.'.
Samiyah sings, 'Carving stakes from ancient pines... if not for her, I'd cross that line....'.

Samiyah sings, 'But for a sister, never known, I only can his words bemoan.'.
Samiyah sings, 'For action taken 'gainst her sire would only cause her pain and ire.'.
Samiyah sings, 'Ja-mi-lla, she must be shown - with truth, with love, in word and tone.'.
Samiyah sings, 'My one true hope, my one desire: that she find peace, and home acquire.'.

Samiyah sighs softly, and stands, moving away from the comfort of the palms.

A Curve in a Desert Trail
[Exits: north east]
An unusually high tide left behind a sizable saltwater pool.

Ink glances at the pool and considers splashing about, but restrains himself. Barely.

Ink utters the words, 'haiojzg'.

Samiyah glances at one of the saltwater fish in the pool.
Samiyah giggles as she pictures it with a beard. 'Silly Swishydwarves!'.

Ink HEARD THAT!!
Chico thinks of brine shrimp.

Samiyah sings, 'Sometimes I think I've come so far, and am as strong as my friends are'.
Ink laughs.
Ink says (in sahuagin), 'What a weirdo girl you are! Your desert ways are quite bizarre!'.
Ink points at Samiyah accusingly.

Samiyah shivers as she sings: 'But even though I am not bold, I learned from actions, lessons cold'.
Ink says (in sahuagin), 'Always doing what you're told - *I* make *my* rules but you're not bold'.
Ink points proudly at himself.

Ink says (in sahuagin), 'And not as smart as me, by far - not quaffing aloe from a jar :P'.
Ink smirks.
Samiyah sings softly, 'His hunting was much worse than spar, my calm to shatter, veil to mar'.
Samiyah reaches up to adjust the drape of the linen around her face.

Ink says (in sahuagin), 'Mostly useless, times untold - no matter how I teach and scold!'.
Ink sighs loudly.
Samiyah sings earnestly: 'I know that he would laugh and scold, but songs are worth their weight in gold'.

Ink mutters, 'songs don't WEIGH anything! Ha!'

Samiyah runs her fingers through the water, causing ripples to disrupt her reflection.

A Narrow Trail in the Desert Sands
[Exits: east west]
With its coltishly thin legs, this young goat frolics through the herd.
Its foreleg bleeding from a gash by a rock, this wounded goat needs care.

Sighing, a young child of the tribe reluctantly tends to the goats.

Chico draws a cold, frosty beer for a young desert goat.
A young desert goat draws a cold, frosty beer for Chico.

The Hound's head rises slightly as he scents fresh meat and spilled blood.

Samiyah looks down at the carcass of the goat and bites her lower lip, sad.
Samiyah says softly, 'We are all part of the Hunt - Hunter or Prey.'.
Samiyah says softly, 'You can only run so far, so fast.'.
Samiyah ponders a moment, wondering whether goats have Threads.

The Hound removes his helm, gazing at the Bard with bloody crimson eyes.
The Hound sings in a deep baritone, 'Little bard, how years have passed! I've been so proud to help when asked.'
Samiyah sings softly, voice barely above a whisper: 'Fresh and bloody, recent past, the final lesson learned at last.'.

Samiyah sings, 'Cursed by some in vile tone? a helping hero, *I* have known.'.
The Hound sings, 'Though - sometimes foolish, danger-prone - I've seen you come into your own'

The Hound sings, 'And though I Hunted to the last, my pride in you was never dashed..'
Samiyah sings, 'Now that deadly duty's past, I'll smile again beneath veil's mask.'.

Samiyah sings, 'Triat's honor set his tone: The Hunt not all that he has shown.'.
The Hound glances over at Seraph, his face impassive, his duty done.
The Hound sings, 'Though His sins you did atone - You see *me*: more than Hound and bone.'.

A Wide Goat Pasture in the Desert
[Exits: north west]
Tongue extended to pull every tender shoot from a bush, this goat is scrawny.
With its coltishly thin legs, this young goat frolics through the herd.
Its foreleg bleeding from a gash by a rock, this injured goat needs care.
Wandering about bleating for its mother, this young goat looks lost.
Its foreleg bleeding from a gash by a rock, this injured goat needs care.
Tongue extended to pull every tender shoot from a bush, this goat is hungry.
Its foreleg bleeding from a gash by a rock, this injured goat needs care.
Sighing, a young child of the tribe reluctantly tends to the goats.

A Narrow Goat Trail in the Desert
[Exits: east west]
The salty scent of the ocean overwhelms the hot, bitter fragrance of the
desert sands, swept in by the breeze from the Maelmordian Sea, easily
visible from this vantage point. Beneath your feet, the tracks of many
a goat are visible underfoot, and tufts of dirty white fur are caught on
the branches of a few scrub bushes. A clear trail leads to the east but
to the west, a sprawling tangle of ancient black briar looks like it would
be painful to try and circumvent.
A tangled sprawl of ancient black briars creates a natural barrier here.

Bare feet covered in sand and goat-dung, Amir swings a stick aimlessly.

Samiyah cups Amir's cheek, saying, 'You have grown so much!'.

Amir blinks, asking in the desert tongue, 'Who are you?'

Samiyah smiles and murmurs, 'Wailaikum, youngling. I am no one. A ghost. Forget you saw me.'
Samiyah makes a 'shhh' gesture, one finger over her lips, and winks at the boy over her veil.

Amir glances up at the stranger, looking confused.
Amir blinks, glances at the briars, and chuckles, nodding.

Tross looks at the boy, then at Sami. She kicks a nearby hillock, spraying sand everywhere.

Samiyah sings, 'I saw a child like you one day, oft alone, and somewhat fey...'
Tross sings, I'm afraid I have to say! That mask you wear gets in the way...

Samiyah sings, 'I offered smiles, a little cheer, or just a helping hand... '
Tross sings, And all you ever do is pray.... and think of goats and sand..

Tross sings, Now I can't bear to see you cry! I don't even quite get why...
Samiyah sings, 'Her sight is true, with bardic eye, a 'Tross aloft within the sky'

Tross sings, even though you are quite shy... you take on such demands.'
Samiyah sings, 'Glad she's found a sailor's berth amidst the pristine sands'.

Tross falls silent, glaring sullenly at the one nearby with wings.

Samiyah smiles, glad knowing her friend has a place of comfort and those who are taking care of her.
Samiyah's smile falters as she looks at Amir, hoping someday the same will be said of him.

Samiyah glances towards the briars, then, hearing a faint song, pushes past them.

A Tiny Clearing in the Briars
[Exits: east]
This tiny clearing within the briar tangle, overhung with stolen tent fabric,
is barely shelter enough to keep out the elements. All within it, from the
sleeping pallet to the reed basket beside it, show years of wear and tear,
unable to be replaced. Even still, every effort has been made to keep this
living space as pleasant as possible, and it is free of vermin or goat dung.
A tiny wind chime made from reeds sings a sweet song as it sways in the breeze.
Singing softly, Zahra tends to an injured goat.

Samiyah gives a glad cry and embraces her mother.

Samiyah hugs Zahra the outcast.
Zahra the outcast hugs Samiyah.

Zahra frowns, gazing at the girl.
Zahra asks hesitantly, 'Samiyah?'

Samiyah nods. 'Yes, Ummah..'.

Zahra looks at her daughter, one hand raising to the girl's veil.
Zahra gently scolds her: 'I helped you escape so you could leave this place behind..'
Zahra continues, 'Not carry it with you..'

Samiyah blushes and stammers, 'I thought I should keep to traditions to honor you.. to honor where I came from.'

Zahra shakes her head, murmuring, 'No, my little songbird. Fly and leave this place behind.'
Zahra repeats herself, firmly. 'No. I mean: Now. Before the Elders find you. Leave this place and never return.'

Samiyah blinks. Blinks again.
Samiyah removes the decorative brooches holding her veil in place.
Samiyah unwinds the dark linen folds of fabric that cowl her hair.
Samiyah lifts the last drape that conceals her face.
Samiyah removes a black linen face veil.
Samiyah drops the veil to the ground.
Samiyah turns towards the briars, glancing back over her shoulder at her mother, one last time.
