[ 3] Madman: Checking on the TFC Status if Problems are Occurring
Sun Oct 15 14:39:23 1995
To: all
If you are having problems connecting to TFC, a way to find out if a KNOWN
problem is occurring and possible resolutions is to use the finger command
to access the information. Do this at a unix shell prompt:

finger mudadm@primenet.com

That will display the information, if any... If you aren't on a Unix shell,
use the syntax appropriate to your system/menu/os/whatever...

Think of this as the TFC-EBS : The Final Challenge Emergency Broadcast System

[ 4] Nayr: Accusations of Cheating
Wed May 22 21:24:03 1996
To: all
If you have witnessed or feel that you have been a victim of cheating, the
appropriate place to report it is a note to God. It will be looked into, and
appropriate action taken. It is *not* appropriate to post to All, demanding
that some punishment befall the person you are accusing. If you feel that
any non-God+s need to read the note, perhaps the person you are accusing
and/or their god, you can include those names in the To: line.
Accusations of cheating are a serious matter, and since we do not normally
post decisions, (Not really wanting the hundreds of notes that would take :)
a false accusation may seriously damage a person's reputation, needlessly.
Further, an accusation to All implies that the poster thinks that unless the
matter is dragged into the spotlight, no action will be taken. You perhaps
can imagine how kindly our hard-working God+s take this implication.

To recap, although we will look into accusations made in notes to All, as we
look into all accusations, be aware that we will be doing it negativly
inclined toward the poster of the note and their opinion.

While this is not a direct rule, it would be nice if it was followed to
further the "world view" and atmosphere we wish to create.

[ 9] Tynian: Bug reports
Tue Oct 28 18:51:09 1997
To: all
The following are the guidelines I use when it comes to bug postings.

When a bug report is posted, the report's content will be scrutinized to
determine whether or not the reported bug really is a bug. If it is a
bug, we will mark it as a "confirmed" bug. If it is not a bug, we will
mark it as *NOT* being a bug. Those two instances are pretty clear. If,
however, the description of the behavior in the bug report is unclear, and
we don't have the definitive information necessary to make a determination,
its status will be "unconfirmed." We will usually annotate why it is
still unconfirmed, and what we need in order to confirm the problem.

If a bug is unconfirmed, waiting for player(s) input on narrowing down
the problem, but nothing more is heard on the bug within about one week,
the report will probably be deleted. What we need will generally be
shown in the annotation of the bug report.

If a bug is marked as "fixed," it will be deleted after it has been up at
least 3 days.

All bugs that are posted can initially only be viewed by god+'s or the
author. I tend to make bug reports visible to mortals (if appropriate)
once it has been reviewed, so you have a way of seeing the current status
of a problem. Please check the open bug reports before posting another,
since we tend to simply delete duplicates.

If you feel you can add more detail to an existing bug report, post
another bug report giving the additional details.

Repeatable bugs are much more likely to be fixed than random-seeming
bugs, so include how the bug can be triggered, if you know.

[ 10] Tynian: Equipment purges
Fri Oct 31 17:19:55 1997
To: all
... or "Just Another Totally Uncool Thing Those Uncaring Implementors
Did to Screw Players Over, But We Actually _Asked_ For A Few Months Ago."

There is now equipment purging code in place, which is designed to purge
limited items from characters that aren't active. Activity is judged
by the code to be experience earned during a given time. If a character
has not earned a certain (non-disclosed) amount of experience in a
certain (non-disclosed) amount of time, there is a chance that one or
more limited items might be purged from that character, so that other
characters have a chance to find and use items which were previously
unavailable to them. Random items are not effected by this code.

The experience used is what shows up as "total" experience in score.
Thank you for your time. I apologize for not posting this warning
sooner.

Tynian.

[ 11] Madman: Patience
Tue Nov 4 20:18:25 1997
To: all
No, not a new mob...

Just a word for you all to be patient with regards to your pet bug fixes
and/or ideas. The order of fixes is governed mostly by what we have time to
to fix in a sitting, whether it is crashing the mud or not, and how many are
affected by it. As you may or may not see, there are over 100 bug reports
and a greater number of ideas posted. They all take time to deal with...and
neither Tynian or I have much time right now. So be patient.

I would say, however, that you all can help us with the bugs and ideas by
following some simple guidelines:
1. Don't post a bug that just says "this happened" without giving some other
info stating your class/classes, your alignment, where it happened, the
circumstances of the event, and so on. Just saying "I got killed while doing
nothing" doesn't help. Same with "I wielded a sharp weapon." We need to know
the specifics in order to investigate, and things without specifics go to
the bottom of the pile. You want someone to look at it, give details enough
so that it is worthwhile to do so.
2. Unless your bug has a flag other than "unconfirmed" or has been annotated
with comments about the bug (not questions about what you mean, but ideas
about the cause or whatever), please remove it when you post a new bug for
the same thing and include in the new bug the old data. In other words, unless
the flag/anno indicates otherwise, please consolidate your reports into one
cohesive report. For instance, someone posted 3 or 4 sepearate reports about
alarms. A single combined report would have been sufficient.
3. Make sure you read the help for a command or whatever before you post a
bug so that you understand what is intended. Then post if your report still
applies. Bugs are not meant for us to repeat via annotations that XYZ help
applies or whatever.
4. Don't post goofy ideas or "gags" in bugs and ideas. While you might think
they are amusing, they waste our time. The volume of things to deal with
right now is significant and we would rather deal with the important stuff
than the fluff.

That said, at least for me, here is the rough order of fixes. Tyn may operate
by a different order, but this is it:
1. Bugs that crash us. If not coding a fix, might be thinking on it, but it
is the #1 priority.
2. Bugs that either make monitoring stuff, checking out things, or whatever
difficult or impossible. Some ideas might get done here as they might ease
things.
3. Stuff that affects a lot of people, even if it is minor in the scheme of
things, if it affects many it makes more sense to deal with it first.
4. Things that affect a few people.
Things that are somewhat working but not quite right.
that was 5 above...
6. Things that affect only 1 or 2 folks.
7. Worthy ideas.
8. Whacky things I think of.
9. Things that sound buggy but are intermittent or unrepeatable for the most
part.
10. Checking out things which were posted with no info.

Hope that sheds some light on things...3-6 are pretty much mixed as I get to
em...1 and 2 are pretty much certain...and 9 or 10 are slated to be dealt
with sometime after the turn of the century.

[ 12] Nayr: The History of TFC
Fri Nov 7 04:18:07 1997
To: All
The history of the world of TFC is long. The stories that describe
the creations and spread of our many races span the most recent
five thousand years of it. Perhaps you have wondered where and how
the Minotaurs originated, why the altar of the Ghost Town is shattered,
who first sailed across the Maelmordian Seas to the Southern Continent.
These stories and many more are contained in the histories of TFC:

http://www.indirect.com/www/rholmes/races.html

As the introductory page there states, these histories are not
finalized or set in stone. Even once they are reviewed and confirmed by
the Implementors, they will change and grow as TFC does. May you find
them as interesting to read as I did to write.

[ 13] Madman: hi levels messing with low levels
Sun Nov 30 16:57:46 1997
To: all
High levels oughta find better things to do than mess with low levels. Period.

That said, there is code in to deal with level based differences, and to
police them. Too many policies that have to be enforced outside of code is
a drain on the game fun, and leads to assorted problem, most of which arise
out of uneven application of discipline for a variety of reasons. Therefore,
we have striven to code in the rules as best as possible. I am sure there
are some bugs/holes and we will do what we can to fix them. But we want to
have as much coded as opposed to interpretted/applied as possible.

That said, in the case of hi levels picking on low levels, we officially
frown on it. And if a god+ sees it happen, and decides that something should
be done about it, then they may just show you what it is like to be picked
on by someone bigger than you. Maybe a rift...a death spell...a trip to
Scrie or Scairz...you never know. Be a bully and you play with fire...and
I will be more than happy to send some of you into the DR or other nasty
places if you want to test me.

[ 20] Madman: WinNuke and other cheats
Sun Feb 1 12:02:41 1998
To: all
Let me inform ALL of you that if I catch anyone using a tool to cheat, be
it WinNuke, or some other work around to hack the game, hack someone elses
access, or malicious attack their service, I will personally take great joy
in deleting you from this game, doing everything in my power to see that your
access at your provider is revoked, and place your name on a list of bug
abusers which be given freely to any mud operator who wishes to have it. I
do NOT think it is amusing nor funny to screw with another person's link to
the game just so you can get a little advantage. If you get caught doing that,
you WILL regret it. Cheaters are NOT welcome here. If you cannot play by the
rules, and play fair, then WE DO NOT WANT YOU HERE. This game is so people
can have fun playing a DnD style MUD, not so people can get their sick
jollies by crashing someone's machine. If you can't deal with that, LEAVE.

For those of you who want to patch your machines to protect yourself from
WinNuke and programs like it, connect to www.windows95.com and access their
security bugs section. They have patches and other programs for these dealing
with these problems. Specifically, for WinNuke, you want the patch or fix
for the OOB error... I won't go into what it does, cause most of you won't
understand...but get the patch or one of the other fixes for it if you are
having problems with the jerks who think this type of thing makes them cool.
Most of em couldn't stand up in a fair playing field...so they need to find
their cheats and crutches and so on to feel good about themselves. Protect
yourself because if you don't, the vermin may decide screwing with you is
amusing, and us investgating after the fact is not going to undo the damage.

Dealing with things like this is why the mud development goes so slow, and
why we are often distracted when you talk with us. We have to waste our time
dealing with morons instead of delivering fun to the majority. To those who
play fair, thanks for sticking by us. To those that don't, you better not let
me catch your cheats in action because you will NOT like the result.

Typos: These are spelling errors, grammatical errors, or perhaps that a
flag is missing that should have been set. Maybe also exits that are blown.

Bugs: These are errors in how something works code wise, be it stats that
go whacky or you did xyz and it crashed the mud.

Ideas: This is where you post if you want something a mob says changed, want
a new skill added, want the published currently correct way something works
adjusted, and so on. Only constructive ideas should be posted.

Please post to the proper lists...that's what they are for. Things posted
in the wrong place are likely to be ignored.

[ 22] Tynian: Restricted sites
Wed Mar 18 17:36:38 1998
To: all
It looks like a few of you have run into a problem which I should have
explained earlier, but forgot about it. Better late than never.

When we have problems with players from a given site, we sometimes find it
necessary to restrict that site from creating new characters. This does
two things, one of which hasn't worked until recently. The first one is
obvious: players from a restricted site may not create new characters.
This kind of restriction has been around for a long time. A popular way
of getting around this is to have your friend from another site create a
character, level it to level 2, log out, and give you the password. This
method of evading the new character restrictions is now prevented. If a
low-level character (less than level 15) last logged in from a site with
no restrictions (thus, can create new characters), that character is _not_
allowed to then log in through the restricted site. This is to make
give-aways, like the one I described above, more difficult. Previous to a
couple of days ago, that level check (less than level 15) wasn't done, so
those who last logged in from an unrestricted site could _never_ log in
through a restricted site. That has been relaxed.

If your character is locked out because of this, you'll need to find some
way to plead your case to Madman, Nayr or myself, and we will see about
letting your character through. If we do, don't go logging in from an
unrestricted site again, or you will have to log in from that site from
now on.

[ 26] Tynian: ideas list
Wed May 27 09:08:57 1998
To: all
Within the next couple of weeks, I will be setting the ideas list so that
it purges "unclaimed" ideas that are older than 2 or 3 weeks old. In its
present form, the idea list isn't very useful to me, and the only apparent
use to you is as a venting board.

What will happen is Madman and I will 'mark' the ideas that are to
endure beind the 2-3 week period. These ideas are ideas that we are
considering in the shorter term. Everything else will eventually purge.
In this way, the list should remain relatively short and manageable,
and you will have an idea of what we are considering in the more
immediate future. That is not to say that all other ideas that we don't
tag are _bad_ ideas... they just don't fit into the overall plan in the
near future.

As a side note, the idea board is *not* a discussion forum. It is a
place for you to voice an opinion on what you would like to see. For
ongoing discussions, notes are more appropriate.

If you have any questions about this, please let me know.

[ 33] Tynian: Respect
Sun Jan 10 12:21:34 1999
To: all
As someone mentioned, it is the players that characterize TFC. TFC's
"character" has developed a few character flaws that need to go away.

Respect my Immortals. If you have an issue with an Immortal, commlog
(HELP COMMLOG) the incident, and report it to a god+ of higher level than
the Immortal in question. You are required to obey them, regardless. See
FYI 0 for details. I have modernized it to include the appeal process,
using commlog.

Respect my hierarchy of Immortals. This is the chain of command for which
problems are resolved.

Respect TFC's players. Be helpful to newbies. Do not harrass the other
players.

Respect TFC. Do not participate in activities which harm the game.

If you cannot respect these guidelines, you will leave. If you don't
have the willpower or desire to leave on your own, you will be shown
to the door.

Someone said, what is TFC without players? In response, I say: without
the right players, TFC is nothing.

[ 34] Nayr: Current Area Projects
Sun Jan 10 17:35:40 1999
To: All
This is the current agenda for area projects. Proposals that help us with
items on this agenda will be given slightly more attention. However,
original ideas are certainly welcome as well. If you are interested in
writing for one of these projects, contact me to find out which portions
are available.

Short-Term Projects
The replacement and removal of all stock merc areas is our immediate goal.
There are roughly 20 of these left, a number of which have been gathered
into grouped projects. Of the remaining set, some need to be replaced with
specific things, while several are open to be completely or almost
completely re-done.

Long-Term Projects
Our current long-term goal is a vast underground region, spreading beneath
most of the realm, with entrances in far-flung places. Populated primarily
by gnomes, kobolds, goblins, and drow, this region will be open for a
great many underground areas.

[ 35] Nayr: Writing Areas for TFC
Sun Jan 10 17:47:08 1999
To: All
The previous process for area proposals and submission is posted under Help
Area Writing. Most of this will still hold. Some of it may change if I feel
it is not working.

Area proposals must be sent to me (rholmes@goodnet.com). Once I have gone
over it, I will contact you and let you if I think the area can be used. If
I like the basic idea but think it needs more work, I will ask that you send
another proposal. Once I have a proposal that I like, I will given you a
vnum, and will be able to begin writing. I will do my best to give you prompt
feedback and as much help with the writing process as possible, but there
will likely be some delay between your sending in a proposal and my getting
back to you, as I have other duties and concerns as well.

Please do NOT go through all the work of writing an area before you send in
a proposal. We care very highly about the continuity and quality of the world
of TFC, and it is a high priority that areas fit well with the existing world.
If your area does not fit in because you did not find out what was needed, you
will at the very least need to rewrite it, and waste your earlier time and
effort.

Also, you will be required to read the history pages, at least skimming the
full set, and reading in detail any pages that relate to your area idea. It
would be a good idea to read them before coming up with your idea, to get some
idea what we are looking for. The address for those pages is in a previous FYI

[ 36] Tynian: Password advisory
Fri Feb 19 11:55:25 1999
To: all
This advisory is to warn you to use a different password for every online
game that you play. Online games should be treated as 'untrusted', and
you should presume that passwords that you provide to the game could be
used against you in some manner.

There have been reported instances of characters on TFC being hacked into.
In at least one instance, it is apparent that the attacker had gotten the
password from another MUD. If you use the same password on more than one
online game, please change your password here ASAP. The character Toupta
was broken into, and (failed) attempts have been made on Daelin and
Beelzebub from the same source. NEVER use the same password for an online
game as you have for your account(s) with an Internet Service Provider
(ISP). Although many MUD's and other online games encrypt passwords that
are stored in player files, not all games do. It is also possible to run
password cracking software against the player files to decrypt these
passwords, or 'sniff' a given network to capture passwords.

Recommended practice is to use a different password for every character,
or at least every site that you play on, and to choose a password that
contains mixed case, punctuation or other symbols, and using words that
can't be found in the dictionary.

Although I can assure my players that I will not attempt to use their
character passwords to try to break into other characters/accounts,
don't take my (or anyone else's) word for it. Assume that your password
can somehow be captured, and protect yourself by making it of limited
use to the attacker.

I have contacted the ISP the person/people used for the latest attacks,
and have provided them with the information I have. The ISP is
investigating. Based on my own investigation, I have banned one account/
site from accessing TFC.

Please be aware that in dealing with future commlogs (Which you must both

[ 41] Tynian: Reform Rules
Sun Sep 5 14:50:34 1999
To: all
There used to be a FYI up on reform rules, but I can't seem to find it
now. Perhaps it was turned into a help. In any event, these are the
rules for a reform that costs levels. If your god is on the inactive
list, your reform is free, with no cost of levels. If your god has taken
your character out of play (e.g. put you in a room naked with no way to
escape), you will be reformed for free, also (upon request). Otherwise,
these are the rules that govern reforms.

1. Only Greater Gods or Implementors (Nayr and I) can do reforms that
cost levels. Any god+ can reform for free (if warranted).

2. You will be reformed for free upon request if you are less than 10th
level (effective). Otherwise, a reform costs 5 levels.

3. The levels come off of your current class. The current class is the
first class listed when you type 'who'.

4. The levels must be taken from the class with the most levels. This
means if you are a 5th level cleric, 11th level warrior, working on your
cleric class, you cannot be reformed until you level cleric to 9th level
and switch classes to warrior (so that the class with the most levels is
your current class), or you level cleric to 11th level (so that cleric is
a class with the most levels).

Mon Nov 15 07:53:10 1999
To: all
No more auctions via notes. If you want to announce a time when you'll
be doing an online auction, that is okay. So is posting *a* note, stating
what equipment is available to trade.

No bids or trades over notes, please. This is not the intended purpose
for notes, and causes things to scroll to quickly... important things
like my version announcements. *whistle* And, frankly, I'm tired of
reading 'em.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Tynian.

[ 47] Lorna: The Fountain of Chance
Sun Dec 19 06:31:09 1999
To: All
From time to time, the Fountain of Chance will appear at various places around the
realm. The Fountain of Chance is just that, an exercise in Chance. If you feel
yourself to be daring or brave, drink of its magical waters. The effects the
waters of the fountain may have will change at random intervals, to a random
selection of different spell effects. You never quite know what you'll get, until
you drink, and it may change from one moment to the next. The fountain will not
always be around.

There is ONE INVIOLATE RULE about the fountain: Do NOT fill drink containers
(such as vials, gourds, skins, etc.) from the fountain. Do not test my resolve
on this issue - you never know when I may be watching.

Lorna, Goddess of Chance
