Official Information:

STUDY LYRICAL
Syntax: STUDY

A bard can use STUDY to learn from a lyrical. A lyrical is a special
magical construct that enhances a bard's experiences and opens up new
knowledge for the bard. Since the knowledge granted from a lyrical is
magically endowed, the bard does not have permanent knowledge of the new
skill. Rather, the bard will retain the knowledge until he is killed.
Death causes lyrical magic to unravel from the mind of the bard.

Lyricals are most useful to higher level bards, and depend on the skill
level of the bard for their power. Once a lyrical is studied, it
vanishes. Lyrical skills do not increase in power from the time they are
studied.

Lyricals are very sensitive. They only endure for short periods of time
before unraveling. Only bards can handle lyricals without the lyrical
quickly decaying.

Lyricals do not save.

Lyricals are uncommon, and few know what powers they may grant.

Player Provided Information

  • Before studying a lyrical, you must:
    • Be at full health and mana. Be aware: Studying a lyrical drains you to 0 mana.
    • Be actually holding the lyrical - it cannot be in inventory.
    • It is not currently believed that studying the same lyrical twice helps in any way, at the same bard level. Memorizing lyricals a second time at higher bard level may be useful.
  • The lyricals that you currently have studied CAN be info'ed by thieves.

Lyricals

Amnesic

This lyrical allows you to "forget" a spell or ability that you have previously Permanently learned. (Items on your PRAC list, not your Memo list)

  • Success:
  • Failure: What is it that you're trying to forget? A bad date? ... unfortunately, you are unable to learn anything from the Amnesic Lyrical.
  • Syntax: If you are trying to unlearn an ability, type "Study (and the name of the ability)" < EG: Study Rescue >. If the spell or ability has more than one name, do NOT use the ' ' that you would normally use to cast that spell. Do NOT "Study 'Magic Missile'" -- instead, the syntax is simply, "Study Magic Missile".

Anticipatory

  • Success Message: ... Hey, you knew your opponent was going to do that. Yep, that too. Cool!
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.

Channeling:

This lyrical appears to 'channel away' the potency of the first spell the bard is struck with in a combat.

  • Success Message: ... Magic can be bent and absorbed... at least a little...
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.
Example:
Orgrim utters the words, 'fuyh'.
You manage to channel some of the power out of Orgrim's spell!
Orgrim's soul rift grazes you.
Subsequently: Orgrim's soul rift ** ANNIHILATES ** you!

Efficacious:

This lyrical increases the spell level.

  • Success Message: The lines of power be reinforced and strengthened.
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.

Elevatory:

  • Success Message: Knowledge is not set in stone, but flows forth like lava.
  • Failure Message: You're as good at that as you can be! ... unfortunately, you are unable to learn anything from the Elevatory Lyrical.
  • Syntax: If you are trying to Elevate an ability, type "Study (and the name of the ability)" < EG: Study Dodge >. If the spell or ability has more than one name, do NOT use the ' ' that you would normally use to cast that spell. Do NOT "Study 'Magic Missile'" -- instead, the syntax is simply, "Study Magic Missile".

Evasional:

  • Success Message: Evasion is not just about avoiding the immediate attack, but anticipating your opponents' next several attacks, and putting yourself in the best position to avoid them.
  • Failure Message: ... if only you were sufficiently learned in dodge. ... unfortunately, you are unable to learn anything from the Evasional Lyrical.
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.
  • PREREQUISITE: you must have Learned Dodge prior to studying this lyrical.===

Implemental:

This Lyrical allows the bard to use staves, scrolls, and other magely magic items.

  • Success Message: You realize the secrets to employing the magely implements of power.
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.

Jubilatory

This lyrical is unlike other Lyricals, in that it has a duration based on the level of the bard that is memorizing it. Jubilatory has two effects: the Primary effect and the Secondary effect. The bard CAN be under the effects of both simultaneously. Jubilatory prevents the bard from attack by aggressive mobs (Primary Effect). If other players strike the bard while under effect of the Jubilatory lyrical, they receive the same general protection from aggressive mobs, but are unable to initiate combat (Secondary Effect). For this reason, this lyrical is sometimes called "Bardic VD."

  • Success Message: This is a time of of celebration. Cast away your inhibitions.
  • Failure Message:
  • Special Failure Message: You've seen too much violence lately to make use of the Jubilatory Lyrical
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.
  • NOTES: If you have been involved in player vs player combat and/or have debt, this may affect your ability to use this lyrical, even hours of mud time after any conflict.

Materialistic

This lyrical preserves your WORN items at death. Your INVENTORY will remain in your corpse, but any items worn by the bard will repop on them at death (Unless they are inventory-flagged items). This includes both PK and mob death. This Lyrical lasts through ONE death.

  • Success Message: You feel less charitable.
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.

Nullifying

This lyrical, like death, will wipe out ALL currently studied lyricals.

  • Success Message:
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.

Precisional

  • Success Message: Precision comes from anticipation, speed, and strength.
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.

Preservability

This Lyrical allows the Bard to retain the lyricals they have studied, through ONE death.

  • Success Message: Sometimes, even death can be cheated... at least a little.
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.

Pugilistic

This Lyrical allows the bard to use hand-to-hand martial arts. They CANNOT disarm an armed opponent while using Pugilistic skills.

  • Success Message:
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.

Quiescent

This Lyrical allows the bard to cast in rooms that have been Silenced.

  • Success Message: Amazing is the bard that needs no noise to get the point across.
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.

Redirectional

For ONE round of combat, the Redirectional Lyrical will _very rarely_ redirect an opponent's attack to another mob in the room. This can be a mob you are already engaged with, or one that is not in combat. The redirected attack only lasts the single round - the primary combat engaged mob does ===not=== continue to attack the secondary mob.

  • Success Message: A little tap here, a nudge there, and a fleet-footed skip over thataway
  • Failure Message: Your movements are not yet precise enough to learn this art.
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.
  • PREREQUISITE: you must have Learned the EVASIONAL lyrical prior to studying Redirectional.
Example:
You have managed to redirect a Triton warrior's attack towards a sea lion!
A Triton warrior's attack is redirected towards a sea lion!
A Triton warrior's slash devastates a sea lion.

Ripostical

This lyrical Will rarely add an extra hit at the end of your combat round. DOES function in conjunction with the Pugilistic Lyrical.

  • Success Message: Sometimes, speed and finesse (and a good weapon) can win the day.
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.
Example:
Your jump outer crescent kick DISEMBOWELS a centaur scout.
A centaur scout's armor deflects your attack.
A centaur scout's armor deflects your attack.
You twist around to lessen the impact of a centaur scout's attack.
A centaur scout's slash MUTILATES you.
Your riposte MUTILATES a centaur scout.

Sustenance

This prevents the bard from getting hungry or thirsty.

  • Success Message: Knowledge is the food of life.
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.

Undisturbingly:

This lyrical prevents the Bard from generating ghosts from the mobs they kill.

  • Success Message: You can soothe you opponents to death.
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.

Vigilance

  • Success Message: Your perceptions tingle.
  • Failure Message:
  • Syntax: No special Syntax used.
  • SPECIAL NOTES: This lyrical has had a number of challenges with interfering with True Seeing amulets that are worn at the time of study. Use with caution. Testing shows that it does not seem to be a TS in and of itself, nor does it help with seeing those who are hiding or sneaking, or prevent/lessen backstab.
