Dog Days and Rain
Counting raindrops as time slides by,
Hands on the sill and the rainbow slick
Of oil from a loud and tired beast
Gone, too fast, too quick.
Eyes cast in downward glances
Idly terrified of the empty spaces
Between here and wherever there
might be... and wonder what that place is.
Fingers drawing snakes in the mist
Drowned in the noise of rain
And the warm house misting the snakes
To death, they writhe on the pane...
Far off the sound of chugging thunder
The beast rounds the turn
And coughs and wheezes smoke
And the tail thumps at the master's return.
