Character History:

Wasted youth would describe me best. Wasted in the fact that I was driven to become my father. My father, the highest decorated supply clerk the Loth Lorien Aerie Guard had ever seen. Least amount of shrinkage over a century was his proudest achievement. Now technically that means the least amount of supplies and good gone (ahem) missing between inventories. The battalions had other ideas. My favorite was “Good thing there wasn’t any shrinkage or Furnie would never have been borne” Ooooh if I had a gold piece for everytime I heard that one. Being the son of the great and mighty, anally retentive, morally judgmental…. Gods I’ve got issues. Had its benefits. Friends are never hard to find when you’ve got a key to the liquor warehouse.

I was in Aerie Scouts and then later ROTC (Ranger Outdoor Training Classes) and then finally I was to move to the big boys. My crowning achievement my father would tell me.. I was to join the Aerie Guard at the highest rank at the lowest age. I was to be second in command of supplies. My head for numbers and my ability to bleed better than any other recruit had set me on the path to fame and fortune behind stacks and stacks of requests for softer leaves for the troops’ delicate posteriors. First I had to make it through the induction ceremony. Kislmet I think they called it. They either called it that or that’s the word I invented for the sound made when the air rushes back into the space I previously occupied. It’s been a few years, but I digress. Please forgive me. Hee Hee like I care.

As I said previously, my heritage had its benefits. I got to know many of those who mattered in Loth Lorien. One in particular was a wizard named….crap I wrote it down somewhere. Anyway he took special interest in me. A little too special I would find out. I’m there at the ceremony in my family’s armor. A set a elvenweave brought over from Cilledelia with the Sweetleaf crest on each piece. I’m on my way up to receive my commission. My father’s pride beaming in his own eyes.. When from the back of the crowd comes “STOP! I will not have this injustice.!”

As the hushed crowd turned there he was, the old and grizzled wizard where he was not previously. To my father the wizard turned and started going on about promises and choices and how he knew war was not the path for me. All I’m thinking is great another public event I get noticed at. Anyway, by the time it was all sorted out I am not destined for a life of sword counting and paper pushing. I’m to be an apprentice Mage? I don’t have to work for my father, ok.

Years later, after my tutelage, I set out to seek my fortune doing minor magics at the Bazaar. Furnock The Fabulous was etched on my pack. A few sprays of color. Vanishing small children and bringing them back inside the Chocolate Maker’s stall. I got a kickback from Ladislaw if the screaming urchin got his parents to actually buy the crap. I was on my way to being the greatest charlatan ever known. But it just wasn’t enough. So I set out upon the world to see what I could see.

By some great humor of the Gods, several inhabitants of this world are unable to die a permanent death. Only to repeat the same mistakes over and over until their turn on the wheel is over and they either slip quietly into oblivion or arise to greatness and join the other immortals of the realm. To the powers that be I’ve said “Hi Oblivion How’s the Wife and Kids?! During my travels I found that I too was on of the, ahem, lucky ones. I’ve even written a book about it. ‘101 Safe Places to Leave Your Corpse’ by Og publishing. It details some of the most impossible places to get to and die a quick death leaving your worldly possessions safe and sound from the outside world.

At about my 200th birthday I started hearing voices and having the strangest urges. No, listener not those urges. I do not write about those but for a few gold and a bottle of spirits I just may kiss and tell. I just could not leave anything alone. No stone unturned and no opportunity wasted to bring a little confusion and mayhem into someone’s life. The wanderlust I had always dealt with. Let’s go find a giant black scorpion. I wonder how long I can stand here before the demons notice me. Is that mummy really dead and DAMN that’s one huge cobra. Gods how many teeth does that shark have? I would count the marks later as I dragged my wet and bloated corpse from the shores of Altibia.

The voices on the other hand I was not dealing with. Ideas, notions, and memories I had never encountered by yet held them as my own:
< I stole his purse while he was paying for his bread
I put sap in his armor when he was sleeping.
Midgaard is OURS!
Goddess give me the strength to cause more MISCHIEF!

Eventually I found the path to new and improved insanity through joining an army after all. I had joined the Army of Mischief. Being a profound bleeder, I needed something to compensate. Reputation. It’s all reputation. If I could somehow set out to spread the word of all my greatest deed and injustices with as much embellishment as possible I just might reduce my chances of finding someone’s dagger in my back. It worked and then it didn’t but oh how I laughed every time I found that dagger in my back because of mere words. I had worked someone up to the point of murder because of something they had heard. And the final joke was on them because I cannot truly die. Their wrath never fulfilled. I spent 4 centuries as a dedicated servant of Syla the goddess of Mischief. I rose in rank and power. Finding new skills as a rogue and renewing my training in the ways of the warrior. I served on my mistress’s high council and provided guidance and tales of adventure to her ranks. I would have stayed millennia but it was not to be. Syla was to complete her final turn on the wheel. Mixed joy for her to finally achieve rest, horror for me as my mind was left empty and alone. Sometimes I’ll sit in the barren temple and I can still hear the voices.

I looked towards other groups and followings to fill the emptiness but none seemed to fit. Until, by chance, I wandered into what was once holy ground to Mischief only to find a new power emanating from the stones of the temple. Walking inside I found a set of scales and 3 chairs on a dais. Balance? This God seeks balance in the world? I think I can help. Why without a little imbalance this deity has no job security. Once a mortal with the same gift/curse as I, Tokugawa had not chosen oblivion but to join the immortals. I served Tokugawa until 2 centuries after my first millennia. There my skills began to grow into my wanderlust and I left fewer corpses. But the places I found were worth the quickest trip. A new continent had been rediscovered. So many new places to explore. Too many new places to hide my corpse. Exercising my favorite spell, teleport to examine every nook and cranny of the new realm became my mission. Not the most efficient but always the most fun. My service again ended not because of my own choice but because Tokugawa had ascended through the ranks of the immortals.

Until recently I have been satisfied with oblivion. Slowly slipping away into the decomposing pages of history was to be my Fate.

Fate. Fate. Fate. It hit me while visiting Tier Sh’Halen. So fitting to rest here all this time. Once perceived as great. Often blamed for the misfortune of others and fading to oblivion. There I would rest and hear the cries of the shattered souls and pretend they were the once heard voices in my head. While pondering my Fate. Fate came to me. The goddess Cordir, another great mage ascended beyond the mortal plane paid me a visit while pondering if I should just jump down a putrid well or float gently through the muck.

Always an opportunist I said, “How’s immortality? Need a little mischief in you afterlife? Add a little balance to the mix?’

So dear reader, here I am. Escaping my own and helping others to face theirs. No matter how nightmarish it may be.

Trivia:

  • Furnock was a member of the Council of Mischief.
  • Furnock was entered into the Explorer's Society for discovering a new Mage ability, rather than an area.
  • Furnock was a member of IPS.
  • Furnock had the habit of removing all of his clothes and 'streaking' through the temple area, graphically shaking his man-junk in general and specifically at people, just to see if he could horrify Cordir. (It worked, and was one of the reasons she rejected him from Fate.)

Furnock provided the slogan for his calling card, "Mage with an Attitude" - and that really epitomized him. He was fearless and bound and determined to entertain. His sense of humor and mine didn't mesh very well, and that caused us some difficulty - but he was a good player and loyal to his friends.
